The successful candidate will work towards achieving overall quality expectations that align with Kode Health’s organizational goals and compliance standards. This position requires a blend of project and people management skills, and a thorough understanding of documentation and coding requirements. In this role, the Director of Education and Koder Success will provide support to koding staff regarding CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems.

This role will oversee day-to-day educational efforts involving CPT or ICD-10-CM/PCS coding questions and workflow issues, leading educational initiatives for coding in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They will maintain a current resource library with reference materials. The role also involves promoting consistency and accuracy in coding practices.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the VP Operations, the Director Education and Koder Success is responsible for supporting and leading ongoing education to existing koders, coordination with leadership for varied projects related to team success and koder development, research of any coding related questions, and the planning and education of newly hired koders. The position is also expected to be able to assist in trending, coding analysis, koder feedback and providing education either individually or developing and presenting a group presentation.

How you will create an impact:

  • Use audit results monitor the quality of koding work, identify areas for improvement and provide education to koders including the implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Create and provide presentations regarding education to the team for targeted specialty areas and coding groups.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on coding as it relates to coded data and reimbursement outcomes, researching coder questions and providing effective, accurate guidance.
  • Lead coding improvement work, including development and tracking of metrics.
  • Provide extensive education regarding any changes to ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT to koders in adherence to regulatory guidelines that is pertinent to their assigned specialties.
  • Develop and implement training initiatives based on the results of internal audits and industry updates.
  • Partner with the auditing team in researching coding-related error patterns and trends relating to coding accuracy.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes (e.g., CMS, OIG, HIPAA) and communicate updates to affected stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a harmonious working environment by interacting successfully with a variety of people who impact the success of Kode Health, and function as a facilitator, liaison, and motivator.
Requirements

Required Position Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Health Information Management or related field or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in medical coding in an acute care hospital setting.
  • A strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Coding Guidelines, AHA Coding Clinic and AMA CPT Assistant.
  • Proficient knowledge base and experience in interpreting and applying federal/government regulations to ensure coding and documentation compliance.
  • Experience in research of payer policy and coding guidelines.
  • Experience creating CEU certified presentation.
  • Minimum required certifications: CPC, CCS, CCS-P, or RHIT.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning, scheduling, and project management abilities.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information
  • Proficient in coding software, EHR systems, and Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information, Health Care Administration, or related field.
  • RHIA certification.
  • Experience obtaining CEU approval through AHIMA and/or AAPC.
  • Experience with teaching of adult learners, including creation of educational materials.
  • Experience in revenue cycle functions, including coding denial management.
  • Experience with a healthcare revenue cycle vendor.
